Reuniting maths with play and debunking myths in order to build mathematical power, confidence and joy

Our initiatives focus on fostering positive and stress-free maths experiences to support individuals and groups in overcoming, preventing and being generally aware of anxiety and fear associated with mathematics.

Some of the ways we do this: 

• Ensure a relationship-based approach to teaching, learning and presenting
• Apply experience and a dynamic blend of academic and pracademic research on learning to shape resources and offerings
• Draw on research and advice from maths professionals, including mathematicians, to actively and explicitly bust damaging myths about what mathematics is, what it means to do maths, and what it means to be mathematically successful

Learning that sparks creativity, joy and wonder are often the most memorable and inspiring. 

Related to this is the craft of teaching which can be a creative, joyful and rewarding experience when the pedagogy aligns with our mission to nurture, empower and support the growth and learning of all students under our educational guidance.

Maths Play values storytelling and celebrates diverse perspectives and skills. We support individuals and groups to see the value and richness of their mathematical potential both as individuals and as collaborative collectives.

How we do this, for example:

• using the 'multiple methods' approach for solving problems and exploring maths concepts
• acknowledging the importance of culturally responsive teaching and continue to learn from and draw on research-based advice and resources in this area

Positive, playful and powerful maths is not only for school-aged children but for people of any age.

The founder of Maths Play identifies as formerly maths-anxious after discovering enlightening and empowering ways to learn maths. It's this personal story, of becoming mathematically confident well beyond the school years, that has led to Maths Play initiatives to support and engage community members of any and any age.

We live in a time when there is more research that ever before, and more autonomy to subscribe to different learning methods and frameworks. There is no one right way to learn maths and we love helping others realise the positive, playful and powerful experiences that are available to them, once revealed.
